In 2023, L.O.D. 600 Construction Technology Services had the exciting opportunity to contribute to a significant renovation project at Big Sky Resorts in Montana. Our team was tasked with providing LiDAR scanning services for both the new and existing tram structures. This project highlights the value of advanced technology in construction and design, specifically Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC).
The Project
Big Sky Resorts, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and premier skiing facilities, introduced a new tram at an elevation of 11,167 feet. The existing tram, a cherished part of the resort’s history, is being repurposed, necessitating precise and comprehensive data for the design team. Our LiDAR scanning services played a crucial role in this process, delivering detailed and accurate information to support the redesign efforts.
LiDAR Scanning at High Altitudes
Conducting LiDAR scans at such high altitudes presented unique challenges. The weather was extremely cold, testing the limits of both our equipment and our team. Despite these conditions, the experience was unforgettable, not only for the technical achievement but also for the spectacular views from the peak. From this vantage point, we could see the surrounding mountains, including Fan and Cedar Mountains, and gaze into the Ennis Valley. One of the most memorable moments was capturing the shadow of Lone Mountain stretching down Jack Creek Drainage and over the Ennis Valley.

The data collected from our LiDAR scans is instrumental for the design team tasked with repurposing the old tram. High-precision scans ensure that every detail is accounted for, facilitating a smooth and efficient design process.
